SANKARA KENDRA , ADAMBAKKAM

SRI GURUBYO NAMAHA

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara

Sri AdiSankara Bagawadpada reestablished Sanatana Dharma in this Great Country 2,500 years ago by vanquishing 72 Religions opposed to our Dharma within his short life span of 32 years. He founded the Shan-mathas and establised Mutts at Singeri, Dwaraka, Badri and Puri to propogate Advaitha. Finally he came to Kanchi, founded Sri Kamakoti Peetam and adorned it as its first pontiff.

His Holiness Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal, the Great Mahaswami of Kanchi was the sixty-eight pontiff of the Kamakoti Mutt and he is considered to be the reincornation of Sri Adi Sankara himself. Like the Adi Guru Sri Mahaswamigal propagated Veda Dharma and Advaitha.

To commemorate the memory of Sri Adi Sankara, the Mahaswamigal establised Keerthi Sthambas at Kaladi, Rameswaram and Allahabad. He has directed that a similar Sthamba should be establised at Adambakkam, Chennai.

This Project is coming up at the Sankara Kendra, and is half way through. Devotees and Asthikas are requested to help and assist the completion of this project by undertaking any portion of the work relating to this project. Donations to this project are exempt U/S 80 G of Income Tax Act and may be sent to "ADAMBAKKAM KAINKARYA SABHA"

HISTORY OF SANKARA KENDRA IN ADAMBAKKAM

Many years ago Sri Mahaperiyaval of Kanchi, while touring Adambakkam, Madipakkam and Nanganallur area stayed there for a night.

At that time HE disclosed that many MAHATMAS have done THAPAS in this area and that many temples and divine centres would springup here in future. As per HIS predictions we find today that temples have sprungup for almost all Deities.

But the absence of a centre to commemorate the memory of SRI SANKARA BAGAVATH PADA and HIS PARAMPARA (To which Sri Mahaswamigal belonged) in this areas was keenly felt. It was as if to make up this deficiency, the descendents of late Srinivasa Iyer offered a plot of about 2.5 Grounds and requested Adambakkam Kainkarya Sabha to construct a Sankara Mutt there. When plans were drawn up to put up a small mutt and the blessings of Sri Mahaperiyaval were sought. He remarked that the place selected was the site of a Siva Temple of "Great Sannidhya' and directed that a Keerthi Sthamba as at Kaladi should be built there for SRI ADI SANKARA.

When plans were prepared for a Keerthi Sthamba in this site it was found that the area was nof sufficient. Hence with great effort the adjacent plot of 1.5 grounds was bought. In this process the anount meant for construction was spent and the proposed SANKARA KENDRA was in the in the foundation stage for a long time from 1988.

During the SATHABTHI CELEBRATIONS of SRI MAHA PERIYAVAL SRI ACHARYA of KANCHI blessed the SABHA with the SRI PADHKAS of ADI SANKARA and the amount needed for installation of PADHUKAS and completion of sanctum sanctorum. Accordingly the consecration was done and nothya pooja commenced. In 1995 with the assistance and guidance of the ACHARYAS of KANCHI and donations from the public the ground floor of the Dhyana Mandapam was completed. So far an amount of rupees twelve lakhs has been spent for the project.

The ACHARYAS of KANCHI and Guruji SRI MURALIDHARA SWAMIGAL visit the Kendra frequently, guide us and give us encouragement and enthusiasm. They have suggested that the KEERTHI STHAMBA to be built, should not only be for SRI SANKARA BARGAVATH PADA, but for SRI MAGASWAMIGAL as well. In addition to the Dhyana Mandapam and Keerthi Sthamba, an auditorium, a library and a goshala have also been planned.

The total cost of the project has been estimated at rupees 36 lakhs. As Rs. 12 lakhs have already been spent a further amount of rupees 24 lakhs is required from the devotees.
